Local history book fair at Swansea Museum on Saturday from 10am-4pm

The annual local history book fair will be taking place at Swansea Museum tomorrow, Saturday 29 October 2011 from 10.00am – 4.00pm.

It's a great chance to come and have a browse and learn more about the history of Swansea and the  surrounding areas.

Dylan Thomas Festival starts on Thursday

Join us for the start of the 14th annual Dylan Thomas Festival tomorrow with a talk by Antony Penrose on Lee Miller’s Visiting Picasso exhibition.  On Friday bring your family and listen to Antony give a hilarious and entertaining story of his life around Picasso including how he once bit him!

With events and activities going on every day up until the 9 November there will be something that every Dylan Thomas enthusiast will enjoy.

Tonight's Bat and Moth Night is cancelled - come to Friday's event in Cwmdonkin instead

Unfortunately, tonight's Junior Park Rangers Bat and Moth Night in Clyne has been cancelled due to the heavy rain and wind forecast. 

There's another Bat and Moth night scheduled for this Friday, 28 October 2011 in Cwmdonkin Park.  It'll take place from 7.00pm -10.00pm and families are welcome - meet at the bowls pavilion.

Equipment, materials and pumpkin soup provided.  Wear warm clothing, Halloween fancy dress optional.  Please contact Steve Hopkins on 01792 205327 for further information.

Tickets still available for the Halloween ghost train

Tickets are still available, yes, but they are selling very quickly.  So if you want to experience the thrills and scares of the Halloween ghost train then make sure you book in advance to avoid any disappointment.

The 5.30pm and 6.15pm departures of the train on Saturday 30 October have already sold out, and other time slots are filling very quickly, so make sure you are on your toes and buy your tickets early.

Glynn Vivian Art Gallery closing party, Saturday 22 October

You are all cordially invited to the closing party of the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery on Saturday 22 October between 11am - 7pm.

The day will be packed full of entertainment and activities for you to enjoy, including workshops, party bunting, screenings, talks and live music.  All events are free plus there will be refreshments available between 5pm - 7pm.

Wales v Australia on the Big Screen, 8.30am kick off this Friday

The Rugby World Cup action continues on the Big Screen this Friday from 8.15am (8.30am kickoff).

Come and cheer Wales on to third place in the World Cup (fingers crossed tightly)...there'll be deckchairs available in Castle Square so you can watch in comfort.

Plantasia's brand new 'Rainforest Hut' to open on 22 October

The Rainforest Hut is the brand new feature in Plantasia.  The hut is a tropical hut similar to those lived in by native Indian tribes, and will be opening it's doors to the public on Saturday 22 October.

With the weather not looking too clever for the whole of this week, this is a great opportunity to take the family to check out the new feature, and with a whole host of activities taking place it will be a fun day out.

Traditional Continental Market comes to Swansea, 20-23 October

Come to Swansea and sample the delights of the continent, as the city centre will be transformed into a continental market between 20-23 October.

Professional continental market traders from France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Holland, Poland wearing traditional costumes will be selling high quality products including Brittany biscuits, olives, Italian nougat, pungent cheeses, saucissons, tartiflette from the Alps, charcuterie, fresh breads, croissants and much, much more!  Or, for those of you with a sweet tooth, there will also be freshly cooked crepes.

 

 

 

 

 

 

There will also be products other than food and drink, including hand bags, soaps and children's toys.

Have you seen Cappuccino Girls yet?

Mal Pope's musical is about friendship and is set in a cafe, and the theatre is an actual cafe-bar in Swansea Urban Village (the new development in High Street). 

You can be served a drink by the actors before the show so it feels that you're part of the set.

Wales v France World Cup semi-final on Swansea's Big Screen in Castle Square - Sat 15 Oct, 9.00am

Rugby fans can see the Wales vs France World Cup Semi-Final on the Big Screen in Swansea this Saturday 15 October. 

Kick off is at 9.00am for the much anticipated match, and there'll be free one-hour car parking in all City Centre NCPs.  You can also park for £1 for 4 hours in High Street car park.

Extra reading by Carol Ann Duffy at the Dylan Thomas Centre after first performance sells out

The Dylan Thomas Centre have arranged a second reading by poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy after  extraordinary demand for the original performance meant that it sold out in a matter of days.

So, there will now be 2 performances on the same day, Friday 9 December at 4.30pm and 7.30pm.  If you were unlucky enough not to be able to purchase tickets for the original 7.30pm performance then you can now get your hands on the earlier, 4.30pm, performance.

Tickets at the Dylan Thomas Centre are £12 standard or £8 concessions, and can be bought by ringing the box office on 01792 463 980.

Buy your fireworks tickets online for 4th November

Tickets for "Sparks in the Dark" Swansea Fireworks display are now available to book online.  Visit www.swansea.gov.uk/fireworks for details on how to buy them in person also.

This years Fireworks display will be held in St Helen's Ground on Friday 4 November, with the gates opening at 5.30pm in readiness for the illumination of Swansea along with further entertainment for the whole family.

The Dylan Thomas Festival 2011 tickets are now on sale

Famous novelist Sarah Waters is appearing at this year's festival, along with a huge variety of talks, poetry workshops and an exhibition of Lee Miller's photographs of Picasso.

Discover Swansea during October

It's going to be a very busy month in Swansea if you are interested the cultural side.  Swansea Museum have the Isle of Wight Festival Exhibition, along with the Home Textile Exhibition and the Local History book Fair.

The National Waterfront Museum will be hosting 'Tarnished Earth: an exhibition of devastating power' which tells the story of one of the world's biggest ecological disasters.

For fans of legendary poet, Dylan Thomas, the Dylan Thomas Festival returns for the 14th year which features the talents of Sarah Waters, Simon Armitage and Pete Brown, amongst others.

Before the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery closes on 30 October, there will be a series of free workshops, free art events and live bands.  While there are also expert workshops taking place at the West Glamorgan Archives.

New family history workshop dates announced

West Glamorgan Archives are running a series of five workshops over the autumn aimed at people who are planning to start family history research or take their research further.

The workshops will be held at the Civic Centre on Monday afternoons from 17 October - 14 November from 2pm until 4 pm.

Workshop Dates:
17 October - Getting the best out of the Family History Centre and how to begin your research
24 October - The Archive Searchroom and using original documents
31 October - Understanding old handwriting
7 November - Getting the best out of church and chapel records
14 November - Using workhouse, prison, court records

Each workshop costs £5 and places need to be booked and paid for in advance.
