Swansea Tennis League tight finish

Well done to all those that took part in the tennis league at Swansea Tennis Centre - Adrian Miller won Division 1 for the second series in succession and retains his title, closely followed by Salar Kasto who took the runners up spot.

Simon Morse takes the Division 2 title in a tight finish against Paul Evans. Both players will now be promoted into Division 1 in the new singles league which starts on September 10th.

Adrian and Simon win free meals for two at either Nandos or Frankie & Benny’s.

Could you be the next Leona Lewis?

If you sing, dance, play an instrument or have any other talents, then step into the limelight at this year’s ‘Search for a star’ and showcase what you have to offer.  As long you are 25 or under you can compete for the title and the chance to win £500.

For those who do not want to take part there is the opportunity to support the local talent and enjoy a great evening of entertainment.  If you liked 'Britain's Got Talent' and are currently glued to the new series of 'X Factor' then 'Search for a Star' will be right up your street. 

The heats take place in Penyrheol Theatre on the 8th & 15th of November, with the Final being held on the 19th November.

Dog choir auditions a howling success

Over 30 dogs and their owners lined up in the grounds of the National Waterfront Museum on the weekend to audition for the Canine Choir.  Their 'voices' were triggered by various sounds and encouragements, and while some of the dogs were hit by a bout of stage fright, some gave renditions of everything from the Coronation Street theme tune to Nessun Dorma!

Creator of the event, and artist, Richard Higlett, now has a canine choir in the making, and plans will now be made to record "A song to Jack", a tribute to the legendary, Swansea Jack.

Back to winning ways

After the disastrous result in our last game (no-one still seems to have any idea what the final score was), the Marketing 5-a-side team's spirits weren't quite as high as previous games.  I however, was quietly confident that we could put up a bit more of a fight, if nothing else.

The party returns for the bank holiday weekend

The hugely popular World Party Weekend kicks off on Saturday 23rd August with the 10th anniversary of the Swansea MAS Carnival.  Swansea City Centre will come alive with over 1000 flamboyant costumes descending to the streets.

The party atmosphere doesn't end there tho, with City Streets - Summer Beats on the Sunday.  Set in the lush grounds of The National Waterfront Museum, what better way is there to bring your summer to a close?

Free event - Poetry and Music in the Glynn Vivian

Come along to the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery on Sunday 17^th August, to enjoy poetry and music in the atrium.  It starts at 2.30pm and entry is free.

There will be poetry readings and music from Scarabella, an exuberant a cappella singing group.

Watch the tennis stars of the future

The annual Junior Tennis Championship, now in it’s 65th year, gets underway next week demonstrating the very best in British talent, and potential stars of the future.

Past winners have included Andy Murray, BBC commentator David Mercer and Welsh rugby legend J.P.R. Williams and takes place from 11th-16th August at Langland, Mumbles and Bishopston Tennis courts.

Do you know an individual or a team who has had a successful year in sport and deserves recognition for their achievements?  If so then you have the opportunity to put their name forward for the chance to win an award at this year’s Active Swansea Sports Awards.

Nomination forms for this year’s Active Swansea Sports Awards are now available to download online.
Taking place on Friday October 24th, the awards provide a unique opportunity to honour the achievements of those involved in sport, at every level, throughout the City and County of Swansea.

Outdoor Shakespeare returns to Oystermouth Castle

Prepare for a wonderful evening of entertainment, as Outdoor Shakespeare returns to the picturesque grounds of Swansea's Oystermouth Castle, with a performance of 'Midsummer Night's Dream'. 

Book online now for this enchanting production (a small booking fee applies), but ensure you bring appropriate clothing, as the performance will take place come rain or shine.

Does your dog like to sing?

Artist Richard Higlett is taking inspiration from the legendary local hero 'Swansea Jack' (If you are unfamiliar with Swansea Jack then shame on you!  Swansea Jack was a black retriever who, in the 1930s, became a local hero by rescuing drowning swimmers from the Swansea docks), by creating a musical tribute to the legend in the form of a 'canine choir'.

'A Song for Jack' will be transcribed into a publishes piece of music and performed at a special on-off concert in Swansea.

Auditions will take place on Sunday 17th August from 11am-4pm, in the grounds of The National Waterfront Museum, and all dogs are welcome to audition.  For further information visit www.artacrossthecity.com.
