Youngsters out to emulate Wimbledon stars

With the Wimbledon Championships currently in full flow, stars of the future are being encouraged to follow in their footsteps and enter the Swansea Junior Tennis Championships this august. 

This year will mark the 65th occasion that Swansea has hosted the tournament, with players and spectators being offered the chance to possibly see some stars of the future.

The Championships take place between the 11th-16th August, and will be held in Langland Bay, Mumbles and Bishopston Tennis Courts.  For further information contact Swansea Tennis Centre.

Swansea prepares for the arrival of Sir Elton

Rock legend Sir Elton John will be jetting in to Swansea this Sunday, to perform at the Liberty Stadium, together with special guests, Swansea's own, The Storys.  It promises to be a fantastic spectacle, which looks set to be a sell out.

A touch of Hollywood at the Dylan Thomas Centre

Superstar actor Matthew Rhys was in Swansea last friday to attend the Welsh premiere of a major movie about Dylan Thomas.

The day saw a hive of activity around the Dylan Thomas Centre as film crews, reporters and photographers made their way to the building for the Welsh premiere of the all-star film, ‘The Edge of Love’. The premiere along with a press conference and reception had been secured for Swansea by the Council’s Culture and Tourism department.

‘The Edge of Love’ Film Premieres in Swansea

On Friday 20 June Swansea will be rolling out the red carpet for the Welsh premiere of John Maybury’s powerful love story The Edge of Love, starring Matthew Rhys, Keira Knightley, Sienna Miller and Cillian Murphy, at VUE cinema York Street.

Matthew Rhys will also officially open the exclusive Edge of Love exhibition at the city's Dylan Thomas Centre that features costumes, storyboards, graphics and other items from the movie.

So, if movies are of a particular interest to you, then why not head down to the Dylan Thomas Centre and be a part of this fascinating exhibition, and then pop over the road to actually VUE the Edge of Love movie.

Upcoming Events in June

Looking for something to do this month?  Then why not attend one of the many events happening throughout Swansea in June?

Why not dance the day and night away at this years Escape into the Park?  Or be part of something special by registering for the Race for Life, sponsored by Cancer Research?  Or perhaps you would prefer some live music?  Well, Elton John will be performing at the Liberty Stadium on the 29th June, and will be supported by local band The Storys.

That's not all, why not start training for the Admiral Swansea Bay 10k run, by entering the Swansea Bay 5k series?  There's also the Under Milk Wood Vehicle Road Run or the Swansea Bay Stroll in aid of the lung foundation.

There literally is something for everyone this June, in the Swansea Bay Summer Festival.

The Edge of Love Film Exhibition

Why not come and view the exclusive exhibition about this summer's must-see (even if I do say so myself), film biopic about Dylan Thomas, at the Dylan Thomas Centre.  'The Edge of Love' stars A list actors such as Keira Knightley, Sienna Miller, Cillian Murphy and Matthew Rees (who plays Dylan Thomas). 

You will be able to view props, costumes worn by the actors in the film and graphic illustrations, and the exhibition takes place until the end of September.  Contact the Dylan Thomas Centre on 01792 463980 for further information.

High School Musical set to be a massive hit

Troy?  Gabriella?  Do the names ring a bell?  Well, if you are a fan of the global phenomenon, High School Musical, they will. 

Following X Factor-style auditions, in which over 200 hopefuls auditioned, the roles for Penyrheol Theatre's on-stage production of 'High School Musical' have now been filled, and the show dates have been finalised.

Tickets are on sale for the production, with the actual shows taking place between September 10th-13th.  Hurry as there are only a few tickets left!

Swansea Show a success despite the weather!

Well, the Swansea Show is over for another year, and despite the best attempts of the wonderful British weather, to ruin the show, overall it was a success. 

Many thanks to all the sponsors, competitors and exhibitors for making the event a success.  There were a host of new attractions this year including a jousting display, extreme sports and welly wanging, plus a host of indoor activities (which certainly came in handy).  Check out a selection of the images from the event on our Flickr account.
